Loop-wheeled sweaters and t-shirts explained

At DC4 Berlin we offer a number of high-quality sweatshirts and tees which are made on loop-wheeled sewing machines - but what exactly does this mean? Let's have a look. The fabric produced by these special machines have a unique texture to them, and are almost exclusively made in Japan. There are just an estimated 200 of these machines left in the world! Have a look at a close-up of the fabric on our very own The Flat Head x DC4 Berlin t-shirts:

Back in the days the machines were widely used, also in the USA. The process of creating a loop-wheeled garment takes a lot longer than any other machinery, so it was just a matter of time before they were replaced with faster ones. Around the 1950's many factories chose for mass-production, so the machines had to go.

The loop-wheeled machines knit the fabric in a tube-like way, where the only tension on the threads used is plain ol' gravity. This results in a fabric that has basically no tension on the threads, which gives the garment a very soft feel and makes it a lot more durable than modern fabrics, and it's also able to retain the original shape a lot better. Because of the slow production process, loop-wheeled clothing is automatically more expensive than regular sweats and tees.

Nowadays almost all of the loop-wheeled fabrics are produced in the Wakayama prefecture in Japan (which is close to Osaka). It's one of the few places where true authentic goods are still made, like the products from The Flat Head and Iron Heart that we carry. They truly have that vintage feel to them and look like the garments your parents or grandparents used to wear in the in the first half of the 20th century!

We will build a radically super skinny late 60`s Chopper out of it !

On that account the bike will share the same name like the famous model.

The Flat Head Extravaganza

Straight from Japan, some beautiful new accessoires by The Flat Head have hit the online shop. Wallets, keyholders and even a silver ring are now available. The Flat Head has been well known for years for it's high quality leather goods. The tan coloured leather of the long wallet ages beautifully and gets a nice darker hue over time. Team it up with a wallet rope by TFH or Manifold and to finish the attire.

Next to the long wallets we also have card cases in stock, for those who like a more discreet wallet. The sterling silver feather-shaped ring is adjustable in size and well, it's pretty stylish.

Next to accessoires we have two new pairs of jeans in: the 3011LTD, which is a limited model made out of 14,5 oz denim on vintage Union Special sewing machines. It's a tapered fit with a medium rise. We've also got the 3002; which is the same as the iconic 3001, but with a button fly and a slightly more tapered leg.

Last but not least is one of our current favourite pieces: the 12 oz Flat Head Wabash Vest. The Japanese know their Wabash game like no other and it shows in this vest. Wear it over a nice chambray or oxford shirt, maybe even paired up with a tie if you're up to it.

Zooming in on the Samurai S003JP Yamato

Samurai Jeans has been amongst our ranks since early 2012 and ever since many of you left DC4 with a brand new pair. Time to zoom in one of the more popular fits, and also the slimmest model we carry: the Samurai S003JP Yamato.

The pair we've photographed had been worn for just one month. The fabric might not be the heaviest at 15 oz, but if feels remarkably sturdy. Samurai spent a lot of time on the details of this model. Expect detailed silver-coloured hardware, silver stitching and even a hint of silver in the selvage.
