Pure Blue Japan - a look at amazing fades

The last time we visited Japan we also went to our friends from Pure Blue Japan in Tokyo, and shot a couple pictures of some amazing jeans they had on display. Pure Blue Japan is known for it's 'slubby' denim, meaning there's a lot of texture in the fabric. They're not afraid to experiment with funky combinations like an indigo warp and a purple weft, giving the jeans quite a unique look. Check out some fades after the break.

Visiting the Samurai Jeans HQ

DC4's Daniel with the Samurai crew, with Nogami-san (the CEO) in the center

We visited Samurai Jeans this summer to talk business. As you now know, that paid off and DC4 will make it a lot easier for you to get your hands on a pair of Samurai jeans. Until the goods arrive, we'll be cruel and tease you with some pictures fromt our visit.

DC4: official European retailer of Samurai Jeans!

While we're very busy altering our new store at the Torstr. 95, we've got some great news for you guys. DC4 is the official European retailer for Samurai Jeans Co! The first batch of garments is on it's way from Osaka, hometown of Samurai, to Berlin so we'll be able to supply you with the very best Samurai has to offer very soon.

Samurai, a company that many consider the 6th member of the original 'Osaka 5' denim companies, is known for it's outstanding denim with almost ridiculous fading capabilities. Their most well-known denim fabrics are medium to heavy weight (say 15 to 24oz) and are easily recognized by connaisseurs all over the world.

More info on the products will follow soon!

Artisanal bamboo fishing rods

Check out this short movie about Nick Taransky, who's an amazing artisan in making fly fishing rods out of bamboo. In thefilm Mr. Taransky explains that it takes up to 60 hours to finish a single rod - which probably makes you wonder about the price. Well, they don't come cheap: be prepared to drop about €1500,- for a multi-piece rod.

It might get a little too cold over here in the northern parts of Europe for fly fishing, but when spring comes around again, we'll surely think of these rods when looking for some river monsters.

It's Better In The Wind

Scott Toepfer collected video footage for over two years while travelling in the USA on a bike. The result is an amazing short movie called 'It's Better In The Wind'. Great imagery, music and bikes, and pretty inspirational if you ask us.

PS... did you know that when you like us on Facebook, you get a voucher code for free worldwide shipping on your purchases at DC4?

Highlighted: Iron Heart Indigo Chambray (IHSH-21)

Today we'll take a closer look at one of Iron Heart's classic work shirts: the Iron Heart indigo chambray (IHSH-21). Made out of 10oz fabric, this shirt feels really sturdy. Since Iron Heart takes its garments seriously, all the details make this piece feel almost over-engineered, which is actually a great thing.
Here we see the indigo version of the shirt that we have in stock for €214,-. Besides this, we also have it in a slightly lighter short-sleeve version over here, and recently also a grey/black version.

It's a selvage fabric - a detail found on a couple places when you closely examine the shirt.

New delivery: Dry Bones

We've got a couple of new items in by Dry Bones. First up is a Type II denim jacket, which is a classic boxy fit and as you may expect from Dry Bones, the jacket's also nicely detailed. At 14,5 oz it's also not too heavy, making it ideal to layer up for the colder months of the year. Make sure that you size right in this one since it'll shrink half a size when washed. And if you're more of a Type III jacket type of guy, we've also got the perfect jacket for you over here.

The Dry Bones DP-560 is a classic straight pair of jeans - and did we mention this batch was created just for DC4? This pair normally comes in a one-wash state and with arcuates on the back pockets, but for DC4 Dry Bones was kind enough to send over the jeans in a raw state and without the arcs. Like the jacket it's also made of 14,5oz 'Sushi Ear' denim, which might be a nice break from all the super heavy denim we've been talking about lately... and it fades incredibly. Available in sizes 29 - 36.

Last up is a selvage chambray shirt, which is made out of some of the most characterful chambray we've seen so far. Combine this with the multi-colour buttons and the sturdy construction, and you have yourself a shirt that you'll enjoy for years. It comes in a one-wash state, so you don't have to worry about any shrinking.

More evolution of the Iron Heart DC4001

Let's take a look at some evolution of another pair of Iron Heart DC4001's, the pair that DC4 created in collaboration with Iron Heart and of course we're still very proud of. It has been worn for almost 5 months effectively, and washed once (if you don't count a couple of rains soaks). The denim gets really soft now, and even though they are 21oz, they are really comfortable pants.

Get ready for winter with Iron Heart

We got a massive new batch of Iron Heart gear available in our webstore now. Let's take a closer look at the new items.

First up are four new check shirt. The 'Black Smoky' and 'Red Smoky' are made out of a very soft 6.5 oz flannel, which isn't too heavy for Iron Heart standards, so these shirts are perfect for layering up now that the days are getting colder again. The other shirts, Ombre Flannels, are slightly heavier at 7.5 oz. Famous for their construction, these shirts will last you for years. Also available in Red and Black.

Of course we got some new jeans too. We've got the Iron Heart 666OD (The Devil's Fit), which is made of a slightly lighter weight denim (still 18oz though!) which is slubbier than most Iron Heart denim. Whilst these are overdyed with black, they will still fade very well, and leave you with a black/blue combo that is hard to beat.

The other pair is only for heavy denim veterans. 25oz denim is not for the faint of heart. The Iron Heart 634XHS (Extra Heavy Selvage) comes in the classic straight 634-model.

The Iron Heart chambray, being well known, is now also available in a salt-and-pepper colour way. We've also got the indigo version in stock, another must-have. Then there's the Iron Heart Indigo Overdyed Workshirt, which comes in an oxford fabric and shell buttons instead of snap buttons.
The last new shirt is a very heavy 16oz Black Western, which could also be used as a jacket.

We'll end this with a pair of boots: Viberg x Iron Heart Scout Boot. It's the first collaboration between the brands, and we've featured them before on the blog. These things are heavy-duty, made of out of water buffalo leather, calf leather, Iron Heart's 21oz selvage denim and a Vibram sole.

Denim Documentary: Warp and Weft

The makers of the documentary 'Warp and Weft - A Snapshot Of Raw Denim In The United States' dive into the world of raw denim and all its aspects. One of the most interesting parts for us is that they're interviewing raw denim aficionados and check out the lifestyle. Since a fair share of our customers is probably part of an online denim community like Superfuture, this'll be a fun thing to watch.

The only problem: these guys need your help. The documentary isn't quite finished yet, and the guys need funds to be able to create it. At the moment we're writing this, they got 24 days left to pledge $1620. Help these dudes out!

Check out the trailer:

Happy Birthday Red Tab

Although we're a couple days late, we'd like to congratulate Levi's with its 75th birthday of the famous Red Tab. It was introduced to the world in 1936 to more easily recognize a pair of genuine Levi's pants. Ever since, the tab has been through many redesigns and for us denim heads, it's even a tool to determine the age of vintage Levi's jeans.

Sales manager Chris Lucier was the one who came up with the idea. Who could've thought that this small piece of fabric would cause such a massive impact and become one of the best known brand icons around the world?

True dedication

A customer of ours shows some true dedication to the DC4 store - by tattooing our logo on his arm. This is truly amazing and we're very honoured by this gesture. The nicely detailed tattoo turned out great.

Also got denim-related tattoos? Please send them to us and we'll feature them on our journal!

Iron Heart DC4001: 7 months of wear

Here's an update on Steffen's (a competitor in the SuperFuture Heavyweight Denim Championship) pair of Iron Heart DC4001. Our brainchild has already seen some amazing wear that translates into this fine pair of Iron Heart's. Steffen brings out the true potential of the IH denim.

So far, he's put 7 months of wear into his pair and it has been washed twice. The competition will run until early 2013, so we expect to see this pair completely wrecked by the time the contest is over.

A glimpse in the life of the Yakuza

Belgian photographer Anton Kusters gives us a small look inside the world of the Yakuza, the Japanese organised crime or Mafia if you will. Kusters is the first foreigner to ever gain access to this very closed world, and made the best out of it by shooting some amazing pictures. He followed a family in Tokyo for two years and documented all the aspects there are to the Yakuza life.

Improved shopping: check out with American Express

It's now possible to pay with your American Express card in the DC4 online shop. We were already supporting Visa and Master Card, and of course PayPal and bank transfer payments.

Also, we know it might seem a little quiet around DC4, but fear not! Soon, we'll be back with a bang, so please keep an eye out on the blog and our Facebookpage for the upcoming news.

Join DC4 at the Iron Heart UK party

On September 3rd, Iron Heart UK is organising an awesome party for denim heads in Gosport, a city in the south of England. Obviously, lots of denim loving people will attend the party, but also some much respected folks from Iron Heart Japan will be there. The president of Iron Heart, Haraki-san, will admire your Iron Heart goods and... you have a chance to drink lots of beer with DC4's Daniel.

Plan on coming too? Let us know in the comments!

Oh and PS... we'll announce the new brand any minute now.

Faded denim: the girlfriends' Nudie Jeans

Here's something that you might not run into every day - a pair of raw denim worn for years and years... by a girl. Most girls don't find the idea of wearing a pair unwashed jeans for a longer period of time very appealing, but Chloé, the owner of this pair doesn't mind.

Taipei by bicycle

Ricor, a photographer based in Taiwan, has created some amazing pictures that document a rather stylish bicycle culture (no fixies) in his homeland. In Taipei, the country's capital, many people are riding bicycles instead of cars or public transportation to get from A to B. These pics offer a great source of inspiration, and while we might prefer a nice Harley to go with our Iron Heart jeans, we think it would be great to cruise through Berlin on a fancy bike like the ones shot by Ricor.

Edwin's Factory

While we might not carry Edwin Jeans, being one the oldest denim companies from Japan, it has a lot of history to it. The company was established in 1947 by Tsunemi-san, who got inspired by the jeans of American soldiers.

This video is a short but beautiful clip shot inside the Edwin factory, where we get a glimpse of the production process. We're not too fond of the distressing of denim over here at DC4, but you probably guessed that already.

Saturday 18 June 2011

Roping

Let's have a look at some examples of roping on the hems of Japanese jeans. Roping happens when the denim on your hem moves one way, and the rest of the jeans turn the other way, creating a twisting effect that is loved by denim aficionados. One thing that's almost obligatory for creating this effect, is having chain stitched hems. Which is no problem at DC4. Get a pair of jeans (in-store or online) and get your new pair hemmed for free on our vintage Union Special 43200.

Japanese Denim Factory Tour with DC4 - Part 2

Here's part 2 of our Factory Tour, this time leading to a company that does the distressing of premium jeans. Sure, we might not sell pre-distressed jeans, but it was cool to have a look around. The workers there were very skilled and created some pretty authentic looking fades using different techniques that you can see in the pictures. The factory processes jeans for big names like Edwin, Lee, PRPS and Iron Heart and has been operational since 1965.

Takayuki Akachi's Traveling Denim Documentary

According to Takayuki, a Japanese film maker, this is a documentary in which 'denim walks freely in the world, meets people, changes and fades'. In the short film you see a girl wearing a pair of Levi's jeans in over 50 countries in two years time. Pretty relaxed background music too if you ask me.

Friday 20 May 2011

Japanese Denim Factory Tour with DC4 - Part 1

On our last trip to Japan we visited some amazing denim factories. Together with the Iron Heart crew we went to a couple facilities, each one had a different purpose. We were allowed to shoot some images and there that we could share with the denim lovers back home. This is part 1, we'll post pictures of the other factories in the coming days.

The Shipwrights.

Lee Jeans, a denim company that needs no further introduction, donated a couple pairs of unwashed denim to the employees of a shipwright company. The guys build so called 'Botters', typical Dutch boats used for fishing. Dutch photographer Joachim Baan went to the working spot in Spakenburg, a small town in the Netherlands, to capture the true essence of work wear. Check out the results in these amazing photo's. This is how denim is supposed to be worn.

Check out the full set of pics on his Flickr. Fancy a pair of Lee jeans yourself? We got a couple pairs of Lee 101Z (made by The Real McCoys) left. Check them out in our online store.

Along with the jeans, we also received new wallets, which should be interesting for those of you who don't fancy the large-sized ones.

The products are available in our online store now!

Super Black Fade To Gray

Just in: Iron Heart Beatle Busters in a very special denim, that will fade from a super intense black to gray. The name Super Black fade to Gray (SBG, as you can see on the leather patch) kinda sounds like a Japanese rock band, which is actually a great thing.

It's a slim straight model with a slight taper from the knee down, making sure this is one of the most flattering cuts Iron Heart has produced so far. And we hear you thinking: 'I'm not getting a pair of super heavy black jeans with the summer being just moments away', but remember Iron Heart denim isn't that hard to wear during the warmer times. The denim isn't woven very tightly, so your legs will still be able to breathe!

Of course this pair also features great details, like an extra big leather patch that will age beautifully, herringbone pocket lining and a hidden knife pocket in the front left hand pocket.

Get your pair here, we got the new Beatle Buster in sizes 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 36.

The Wizard of 21OZ

Here's the pair of Iron Heart DC4001's worn by Steffen, who's also a competitor in the Heavyweight Denim Championship organized on the denim forum Superfuture. These jeans will be worn on almost a daily basis until at least February 2013, which means you can expect a lot more updates on these jeans over time!

In these pictures Steffen has worn his jeans for 3 months, and they haven't been soaked or washed yet. We're very impressed with the wear already, the denim looks very crispy and the fades are sharper than you'd expect on Iron Heart denim. Do you have pics or your own pair of Iron Heart or any other brand that you'd like to see featured on the blog? Send in some pics with a description and we'll show 'em to the world!

Iron Heart DC4001 - 80 days of wear.

My beloved pair of Iron Heart DC4001 have been worn for 80 days now, and the different hues of blue are popping trough. The Iron Heart denim has a surprising amount of 'depth', considering its weight and other characteristics. Check out some detail shots of the jeans. Some full front- and back pictures will be taken on the next update! Now that the weather is starting to go into the 20's again it'll be a little harder to wear 21oz denim, but I just have to be brave.

Sunday 27 March 2011

Send in pics of your faded jeans!

Did you get an awesome pair of jeans at DC4 (or somewhere else, we're not that strict) and you wore them to shreds? Please send in some pictures of your jeans to blog@dc4.de and we'll feature them on the blog for the world to see.

Also, we've got three new Iron Heart shirts available for you guys; two western style shirts with mother of pearl buttons, and a flannel. Check them out in our new and improved webshop!

Mustang Paste Horse Oil

We are proud to present that we are the first store outside Japan to sell Mustang Paste. It's a highly efficient leather conditioner based on horse oil, and will bring back life into your beloved belts, boots, leather patches, bags, jackets and whatever you can think about. It's even more efficient than mink oil, which is used by leather aficionados a lot. Also, it's even perfect to condition cordovan leathers with Mustang Paste.

We'll do our own test report soon on some leather products to show how great this stuff really is. Get your own Mustang Paste supply in our online shop.

Finding your dream motorcycle - in a toilet.

Imagine this: in the late 1940's you're a gentleman going by the name of Mr. Bicker, and you hear a tale that a genuine Harley Davidson is stored somewhere in a remote mine, still fresh in the wooden crate the factory released it in. The mine is located in Western Australia, and you happen to live there. Your dad is able to locate the bike after an extensive search, and the bike turns out to be hidden in - of all places - the toilet.

The bike, produced in 1929, turns out to be in an immaculate condition, and although the bike was only about 20 years old back then, it wasn't considered very rare, but still a nice collectors piece. Since the owner of the mine couldn't get the bike started, he decided to sell it. Mr. Bicker bought it and managed to start it quite easily.

This is a true story, and earlier this year the bike got sold for $125.800 at the Bonhams Vegas Auction. To us, finding a bike like that (or a pair of denim!) in some abandoned mining town or a barn yard, would be a dream come true.

By the way, we got a nice piece by The Flat Head available in our webshop right now that would go along pretty well with a vintage ride like this. It's a cap made out of 12oz indigo dyed wabash fabric. Check it out here!

The DC4 online shop revised!

The DC4 online shop got a little makeover. Together with our friend Peter we created a new platform for you to get all your Japanese denim needs. We wanted to make the webshop easier to use, and of course a bit better looking. We'll also accept credit cards as soon as we got the last formalities sorted out, to make shopping at DC4 all around the world even more accessible. Please tell us what you think in the comments or on our Facebook page!
Andy approves this message, and reminds you that we are still well-stocked on The Flat Head gear. By the way, remember that special Iron Heart x DC4 t-shirt collab we told you about a while back? It's available! Don't sleep on this, only 30 pieces were made.

Japan

Our thoughts go out to our friends in Japan going through rough times right now. We are baffled by the disasters and send out our deepest condolences to all the victims and their families.

Marvin's Vintage

Another gem from Japan: Marvin's Vintage, a vintage denim shop in Tokyo. Of course the web design looks amazing. Gotta love the '(C) 1991 Mavin's Vintage' at the bottom of the page. Unlike the recent post about Takashi and his collection of Japanese denim, Marvin's is all about vintage goods.

You can get a lot of different stuff; from Hawaii shirts from the 1940's to €55.000 Levi's jeans from the late 19th century. It's a lot of fun to just browse around to see what they have to offer. Sure, almost nobody will actually have the cash to drop on a pair of vintage denim (you could also buy a brand new BMW, for example), but e-window shopping is also fun.

PS: The blog is taking a little break for a skiing trip in Austria, but will be back soon with new stuff!

Sunday 27 February 2011

Highlighted: The Flat Head 1001

The Flat Head 1001 is based on the extremely popular 3001-model. The Flat Head decided to step it's game up and created the same cut but with a heavier fabric (16oz instead of 14.5oz) and called it the 1001.

Exclusive at DC4: Manifold Detail Works

Remember that a little while go we told you something nice and exclusive was coming? Well, it's here! The brand is called Manifold Detail Works and the first batch of products are available in our online shop now. A second batch is expected next week. Check out these pics that show what Manifold leather goods are all about - crazy leathers and extreme detailing. We're really proud to be able to offer you these bad ass wallets, bags and leather reigns as the only retailer outside Japan.

Rin Tanaka's Queen of Vintage

Over here at DC4 we're very excited over the vintage collection of Kathleen Schaaf, the owner of Meow Vintage which is featured in this book by Rin Tanaka. 'Queen of Vintage' follows up 'King of Vintage', which was about Larry McKaughan's collection.

Schaaf collected an amazing array of women's, kid's and men's vintage clothing and accessories. Check out some of the goods after the break. The book is available in our online shop, and since it's a limited copy, don't sleep on it!

Sunday 20 February 2011

Takashi's awesome denim collection

It's Sunday, and you've probably got a spare hour at your hand. Take a look at an amazing denim collection, with lots of worn in samples. The website is rather poorly made, which only adds to the charm. Takashi covers lots of well know brands, like Evisu, Denime and Sugar Cane, but also has a few gems that you don't read about very often, like American Dream and Dania. It helps if you can read Japanese. If you don't, Google Translate is your friend.
 Takashi's Denim Collection

Making progress: DC4001 at 2 months

So this pair of Iron Heart DC4001's have been worn for almost 2 months. The denim has really softened up, thank god. They are actually pretty comfortable now! Wearing 21oz denim has a downside though: it makes all your 'regular' weight jeans feel like silk pyjamas. The indigo is breaking in a bit as you can see in these pictures. Still, it's only been 2 months and since this pair is competing in a 2 year contest with other heavyweight jeans, you can expect a lot more from this pair in the future.

Saturday 12 February 2011

Iron Heart x DC4: the 2nd t-shirt collaboration!

In two weeks we've got another exclusive Iron Heart x DC4 collab in store! Together with the guys from Iron Heart we created a graphic design for a t-shirt when were at the Iron Heart HQ last November. Since the Iron Heart culture revolves around custom motorcycles a lot, we were inspired by the beautiful bikes at the HQ. Together with Hiro-san this t-shirt was designed and it will be printed on Made in Japan, heavyweight, high quality cotton shirts. What else would you expect?

The back of the t-shirt says '21st century hardcore'. The first t-shirt collab was a great success, so don't miss out when this one drops! Only 30 (!) pieces will be available, and this will be a one time run.

Get bulletproof with The Flat Head

After we got some great new stuff in by Pure Blue Japan last week, it's The Flat Head's turn this time. We've got two flannels in colorways you can easily wear whether it's spring, summer, fall or winter. Also, have a look at the limited edition denim shirt, inspired by shirts from the 1940's. It's embroided on the front and the back, and knowing TFH, the denim will break in spectacularly.

Now on to something quite bizarre: the strongest denim The Flat Head has ever produced. They didn't accomplish the strength by producing super heavy 21oz+ denim, but instead they chose to weave the kevlar into the denim. Kevlar. That's a material they use to create bulletproof vests. The denim is 'only' 13,5oz, but we'd like to see a little Iron Heart vs. The Flat Head Kevlar competition so see which denim will last longer.

Another truly spectacular piece: the Type II denim jacket. Trust us on this one, it really is one of the greatest and most sought after denim jackets ever produced. It's a classic and boxy style fit, and when given the right amount of love, will look something like this in a couple years (click to enlarge):

We also received a restock on the popular The Flat Head 1001 model. Check all the products out in our online store!

Viberg Boots x Iron Heart Works Inc.

Viberg, a Canadian manufacturer of high quality boots coveted all over the world, has teamed up with Iron Heart to create a spectacular piece. The toe cap of this boot is made of black leather, the rest is a deep blue hue, and of course it features Iron Heart's signature denim. And unlike other boots, you won't need to worry about your jeans bleeding on the leather.
